In this section you will find some of the most common traditional
tools for the boat manufacturing:
Adze
Millenary tool used for blanking and working the wood. It
consists of a curved steel blade with a wide edge (10-12
cm), which gets adjusted to a handle.
Brace
Turning tool used for piercing the wood.
Polishing brush
Tool used to smooth and to wear battens, planks, and so
on. It consists of a tough and prismatic wooden piece and
of a joint that goes through it. In this joint there is
a projecting steel blade with a very thin edge that comes
from the inside and which is fixed by an iron piece and
a wooden wedge, the latter also used to handle it.
Chisel
Steeled iron tool with a thin edge which is formed of a
bevel and a wooden handle. It may be of different widths
and it is useful for cutting and blanking.
Caulker’s hammer
Percussion tool composed of a tough and hunk trunk-looking
wooden piece which has a metallic ring in every edge in
order to prevent the wood from splinters. The handle is
also made of wood. The size of the hammer is usually proportional
to the size of the ship.
Hand-saw
Tool consisting of a steel blade with some sharp teeth in
one edge and a handle. For cutting wood, it is needed to
move the hand-saw once and again.
Tongs
Tool used to hold something tightly, to tear it off or to
cut it. It consists of two crossed arms which turn around
a common axe.
Set square
Drawing tool consisting of an isosceles triangle that allows
to draw right and 45º angles and parallel lines.
